My Roots

The story of an American family

My parents are both from Mexico, A little town called “Concepcion de Buenos Aires.” It’s a beautiful rural town in Jalisco. It’s full of lights and music, especially during the holiday season. There’s “puestos” where people gather around and sell little things like bracelets, bags, hair stuff, food and more. There’s also stores and businesses around the Plaza like the mall and some boutiques. That town is full of life, There’s always kids running around and laughing. My parents met when they were teenagers, my mom was a single mom at the time with my sister who was around 6 months old at the time. My mom was 17 years old and My dad was 18. Being a single mother was hard, She always wanted the best for her baby and for herself. My dad was 18, and he was the youngest out of 7 siblings.

They met at a pharmacia by my mom’s house. My mom’s neighbor owned the store. My mom had sent my mom to go to the store and pick up some things. They ran into each other and it was Love at first Sight. They talked for a while then they eventually had to part ways. They reunited after a while, exchanged numbers, chatted for a bit, and had a little “teenage fling”. After this, My dad had to come back to the US. He Lived in Mexico for some time but his main home was here in the US, that’s where he was raised. My parents broke up because of the distance. My dad was so in love with my mom that he asked her to come with him, so that he could provide a better life for her and her baby here in the US. My mom really wanted to accept the invitation but she didn’t think it was realistic nor possible. My mom didn’t want to leave her family behind and she loved it in mexico. So she gave him a choice. If he came back in two years she would go with him. They parted ways and he came back here.

Two years later he returned. My sister was almost 3 years old and My mom had a stable life in Mexico. She was still in love with him, and they still maintained contact through those two years. When he came back for her, my mom knew she had to go. She didn’t hesitate to say yes and she was extremely happy that he still loved her enough to come back for her. They both convinced my grandma to let my mom come and live over here. They took a couple months to get everything ready and to process that they were about to start a whole new life. Sometime around April 2002, They made their way to the US.

They came on a plane, my mom still has the ticket they gave them. They went to San Bernardino first, lived there for a couple months then decided to move here to Truckee. They bought a place, and continued their relationship and life. In 2010 they got married, I was 4 years old. They’re still together to this day and they are living a happy life. Of course not all stories are that happy, there were a lot of struggles and a lot of arguments, as there is in every relationship. They have their ups and downs but they still love each other as if they had just met. They moved here to have a better life, and while doing that they had me, so this is my parents story and my roots.
