The holiday season is notoriously known for being an expensive season for everyone. It’s called the season of giving, and gifts can be costly. For those struggling financially, this season can often be dreadful. However, there are many programs made solely to support those in need. Here is a list of ideas to give back during the holidays in the Tahoe area.
- Food Banks:
Provide food or volunteer at a local food bank to help give warm, good meals to families on Christmas Day. In the Tahoe area, Sierra Community House is the primary food service provider, offering weekly food distributions and emergency delivery services. If you can not donate, volunteering is another way to help. Between soup kitchens and assisting with other programs, the opportunities are endless.
2. Donate Toys:
Many families do not have the budget to purchase toys and gifts for their children. One of the most well-known organizations that provides spaces is Toys for Tots, a program made by the Marine Corps Reserve. There are boxes all scattered throughout town, and you can drop off gifts there. Also, dropping off used toys at local thrift stores is another great way to provide people with affordable options to buy gifts.
3. Volunteer Time:
If you are not able to donate, volunteering is another way to give to those in need. There are many organizations to help out with, such as the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, which hosts the “Holiday Help,” an event to support families in need. There are also programs in the Reno area if you can commute, such as the Eddy House, which helps and provides for homeless and at-risk youth.
4. Be Someone to Lighten the Mood:
The holidays are stressful. If you find yourself too overwhelmed to support those in need, just be a friendly face. One good conversation can help, and people might just need emotional support this season.
There are options to help families in need, especially in the Tahoe area. Make sure to look for all of the programs available, and support people in the season of gifting by giving back to the community.
