Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” is a story that has withstood the test of time, with an essence of warmth, joy and nostalgia for audiences across the world.
First released in 1954, the film follows two Army buddies after World War II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, as they become a successful musical comedy duo and a Broadway sensation. While on the road to Florida, the stars meet a sister singing act, Betty and Judy Haynes. The men journey with the women to Vermont, where despite romantic complications between the four performers, the story ends on a happy note when their Christmas Eve performance brings rave reviews and the first snowfall of the season.
The film’s success led to its adaptation for the stage, becoming a beloved Broadway seasonal favorite. The Broadway musical version features music and lyrics by Berlin and is based on the classic 1954 film, while also incorporating new songs and added plot elements to enhance the theatrical experience.
From Dec. 5-14, 2025, the Broadway production was staged in Sacramento, California at the UC Davis Health Pavilion as a part of Broadway at Music Circus. Featuring NYC Broadway stars like Jason Gotay and Britney Coleman, the production offered a classic holiday musical experience for audiences of all ages.
Broadway Sacramento’s performance was alive with energy and joy, bringing a sense of glee and excitement to anyone watching. From the moment the cast began singing and dancing, it was clear the audience’s spirits were lifted and the venue felt full of life with holiday cheer.
The actors appeared in many vibrant, vintage-inspired costumes, and the UC Davis Health Pavilion’s rotating stage was showered in glowing and colorful lightning. Together, these elements created an atmosphere filled with love and Christmas spirit.
The show featured around seventeen of Berlin’s songs from the original film, including the well-known favorites of ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Sisters,’ along with four additional numbers adding a sense of freshness and excitement to the show. Tap dancing also played a major role in the performance, showcasing the cast’s incredible technical abilities and adding fun to the production.
Most importantly, Broadway White Christmas created a shared feeling of togetherness among audience members, enhancing the Christmas spirit of giving, generosity, harmony and connection during the holidays.
Decades after its original release, White Christmas continues to uplift audiences through both its Broadway stage adaption and classic film. From the vibrant colors, to the old music and sounds of laughter from the audience, Broadway Sacramento successfully captured the essence of the beloved story while also spreading Christmas spirit throughout the region this December.
