Update – TTUSD announced their proposed plan to move to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), in a regularly scheduled district meeting on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, which has been to the California Department of Education (CDE).
According to a letter sent to students and families on Thursday, December 18, 2025, “TTUSD submitted a formal Athletic Transition Plan to the California Department of Education (CDE).” They attached the full plan on the TTUSD website.
This includes a multi-step process, starting with legal participation [check date] July 1, 2026, followed by full operational participation in CIF starting in the 2028-2029 school year. TTUSD’s intention with this plan is, “to comply with the law while mitigating the disadvantages of a rushed transition for our student-athletes.” While this plan has been officially submitted to the CDE, it has not been approved yet and awaits confirmation by the state before being officially implemented for local schools.

The Truckee Tahoe Unified School District has been mandated to move to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) for the 2026/2027 school year, according to a letter sent to students and parents on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
According to the letter, the California Department of Education (CDE) received formal complaints against TTUSD, after their decision in the spring to postpone a legally required move to the CIF for the 2025-2026 school year on the basis of student athlete protection regarding gender identity. The letter stated that last year, the decision to stay in the NIAA for another school year was “due to significant logistical challenges.”
According to the letter, TTUSD has had their local control revoked by the CDE, and an official transition to the CIF will be required to avoid further legal action.
TTUSD Superintendent, Kirsten Kramer, will be providing more information at an upcoming meeting, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the TTUSD District Office Board Room, 11603 Donner Pass Road, Truckee CA. It will be open to public comment and available to livestream.
