The TDRPD ice skating rink at the regional park is open for the season, inviting family and friends to participate in another outdoor activity in the winter months of Truckee. Located next to the Truckee Regional Park on Old Brockway Road, the seasonal outdoor rink is open three days a week with varying holiday schedules.
TDRPD Public Skate Times:
Fridays: 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Saturdays: 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Sundays: 12:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
The website also shows the ice rink fees, ranging from the lowest passes for local youth or seniors to the highest for non-resident admission. They also offer season passes starting at $90. This price point offers an affordable alternative to other winter sports, like skiing, that can be extremely expensive for one or even two days. For those without skates, rentals for the day start at $8, and for those that do have them, they offer a skate sharpening service for $15.
As an affordable and convenient winter activity, the community ice rink is another option for families with young children, as well as adults or teens who want to try a new sport.
Elin Bottomley, a Freshman at Truckee High, said,“I like the ice skating rink because it’s a fun activity to do with friends and you can learn so much on ice skates. And you don’t even have to learn, you can just have fun with friends.”
Also, as an outdoor rink, it promotes several health benefits that may be difficult to come by in the winter months. According to Piedmont Health, outdoor exercise “can help ward off seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression and anxiety because sunshine naturally increases serotonin, a hormone that affects your mood.”
For those who do not want to participate, a hot chocolate booth is open with picnic tables and chairs for the observer.
