Truckee High School’s football team, soccer team, and volleyball team recently had their State Championships. Volleyball lost 3-2 against Moapa Valley, football lost 42-7 against Elko, and soccer lost 4-1 against South Tahoe.
The Truckee volleyball team’s loss broke their 11-game winning streak, leaving the 12 girls at a devastating loss.
According to MaxPreps, senior Madison McLellan played the lead role in offense with 17 kills throughout their game against Moapa Valley with help from senior Makenna Hogland and her 36 assists.
“I am bummed about our losses, but I think that the most important thing about losing a game is what you learn from it. Taking the positive out of a bad situation helps me move on faster and allows me to learn from mistakes and stay on track,” says McLellan. “I think overall, the improvements that could be made throughout any team are everyone’s mindset. Yes, losing sucks, but it builds character and allows for growth to happen. If a team wins all the time and has one loss, they will fall apart, unless they have the right mindset and capabilities to be positive.”
The Truckee Football team’s loss broke their five game winning streak which they had throughout the beginning of the playoffs. MaxPreps says junior Bennett Jitloff and senior Sam Kuntz were the top players throughout the match with Jitloff rushing 9 times for 105 yards and Kuntz throwing 17 yards who stood out for being the other passer for Truckee.
The Truckee Soccer team’s loss broke their three game winning streak. According to Sierra Sun, Truckee Volleyball had won state championships in the years of 2010, 2011, 2016, and 2021, which was against Moapa Valley. This could be because other teams have gotten better, or Truckee has gotten worse.
Nevada Sports Net says that the Truckee Football Team has won state championships 14 times which is the most in Nevada history. These victories have been pretty spread out except for the back-to-back wins during the years of 2022 and 2023.
Truckee High Booster says that the boys soccer team has won a total of 8 state championships. Most recently in the year of 2014 but some other notable years were 2007, 2008, and 2009. Sierra Sun says this is because of strong competition, player absences due to academic ineligibility, and the school’s unique position as a California school competing in a Nevada sports league, similarly to the volleyball team.
Competing in a Nevada sports league as a California school can affect their winning for many reasons but mainly due to the California state law which requires public schools to allow student-athletes to participate in sports based on their gender identity, not their sex assigned birth.
The Truckee volleyball, football, and boys soccer team will all put in the work and try their best to win state championships next year.
