In a time when women were silenced and their right to their opinions was abolished, they could stand up in front of a crowd and “channel” respectable men from the past and speak their minds. This part of history isn’t particularly well known but certainly helped fuel the women’s rights movement.

One of the key aspects of the book is the relationship between Edie and Violet. Their relationship as twin sisters plays a big role in the story as they learn to be okay with going their separate ways, while still maintaining the bond that’s helped them survive all these years. This was, in many ways, inspired by Glaze’s own relationship with her sister. She says, “I’m super close to my sister.” Like Edie, Glaze has also tried to protect her sister over the years. Sense and Sensibility, a well-known classic by Jane Austen, also partially inspired their relationship.

Before writing The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond Glaze worked in the film industry. However, the idea of writing her own novel was never far from her mind. “I’ve always been a reader,” she says, “I love books.” When creating films there are hundreds of people all working on it together, but writing a book is all on the author. This was something that appealed to Glaze.
