Interview with Amanda Glaze: The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond

The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond by Amanda Glaze was published on October 4th, 2022, and is a supernatural thriller filled with suspense, mystery, feminism, love, friendship, secrets, and paranormal worlds. The story will take you back to the 1880s in an action-packed adventure, sure to keep you turning the page all night long.

Edie and Violet are on the run after their father threatens to lock them away in an asylum following the death of their mother. With the help of the supernatural powers they inherited from their mother, they secure themselves spots in a traveling medium group. They are on the brink of safety and security when danger and the secret behind their mother’s death begin to churn in the dark.

The story was inspired by Glaze’s own great great grandmother Edie, and her twin sister Violet. Although a lot of the story is based on fiction, many of the core elements are true to history. Edie and Violet did hold seances and their father was a minister, however, they weren’t necessarily running away from him.

Another aspect of the book that rings true to history is the spiritualism movement. In a time when women were silenced and their right to their opinions was abolished, they could stand up in front of a crowd and “channel” respectable men from the past and speak their minds. This part of history isn’t particularly well known but certainly helped fuel the women’s rights movement.

One of the key aspects of the book is the relationship between Edie and Violet. Their relationship as twin sisters plays a big role in the story as they learn to be okay with going their separate ways, while still maintaining the bond that’s helped them survive all these years. This was, in many ways, inspired by Glaze’s own relationship with her sister. She says, “I’m super close to my sister.” Like Edie, Glaze has also tried to protect her sister over the years. Sense and Sensibility, a well-known classic by Jane Austen, also partially inspired their relationship.

Before writing The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond Glaze worked in the film industry. However, the idea of writing her own novel was never far from her mind. “I’ve always been a reader,” she says, “I love books.” When creating films there are hundreds of people all working on it together, but writing a book is all on the author. This was something that appealed to Glaze.

This novel explores a world undefined by the stereotypes of magic and ventures into one complete with mystery and secrets found in the dark. Discover the truth of the seemingly idyllic Sacramento when the characters are forced to brave the basements of asylums and other worlds. Read this novel and forget your own troubles as you dive into the lives of Edie and Violet Bond.
