First it was a book, then it was a play, and now it is a movie. Little Women follows the lives of four sisters. We see heartbreak, personal breakthroughs, and struggles. Truckee High will be showcasing this classic for the fall play.
The novel was first published in 1868 and was written by Louisa May Alcott. Alcott wrote the book about her and her sisters’ lives. The story reflected the struggles of the time period; However, many of the themes remain relevant to the present day.
After Meg gets married, we see the sisters pursue careers. Jo moves to New York to become a governess and see the world, with the hope of expanding her writing. Amy goes to France to work on her painting. Both experience personal struggles and have moments where they doubt whether it’s possible to build a career.
When Beth gets sick for the second time, it puts a halt to Jo’s career as she comes home to be with her. Beth dies, and this is a big blow for Jo; she becomes a person who never writes and only does household work.
Through the memory of her sister, she realizes that all she needs to do is write about home and her life. She begins remembering all these little things throughout her life, creating a novel. The book Jo writes is Little Women, and in the play, we can see the creation of that.
Just like the March sisters, women today have to go through career struggles, personal heartbreak, and more. Even with more opportunities than in the past, most women have to work harder to be seen as an equal to their male coworkers. Many people still believe that women belong as housewives, causing some to have to give up on their dreams, breaking their hearts.
There are many versions of this classic. Truckee High will be doing the adaptation by Heather Chrisler. Come support Truckee High students, Jo Wurzelbacher as Jo March, Daisy Kuzma as Meg March, Dani Mason as Amy March, Lucy Greenwood as Beth March, Jack Ridgel as Laurie, August Stepper as John Brooke, and Thomas Greenwood as Professor Behr.
