Truckee High School’s annual Broman game took center stage on Thursday, March 20, as the junior and senior boys faced off in a highly anticipated volleyball match. Students, parents, and faculty gathered to witness the friendly competition, serving as a fundraiser for the Associated Student Body (ASB).
The event began with the national anthem, setting the stage for the game, followed by the introduction of each player, accompanied by a fun fact. After that the student coaches for both teams also received a warm welcome before the action commenced.
The seniors found themselves in early trouble as the juniors jumped into a quick 3 point lead, after some back and forth between the teams. However, the seniors capitalized on a series of errors by the juniors, managing to even the score. A timeout was called and tensions were raised as both teams huddled up to strategies.
The momentum shifted in the seniors favor following an intense rally that ended in a joust at the net between junior Griffin Crezee and senior Donovan Martin, earning the seniors a pivotal point. Following that senior Timmy Koehler delivered a strong serve, but a miscalculated block from Rio Coll handed the juniors a point. Despite their efforts, the juniors couldn’t reclaim the lead, and the seniors secured a narrow 25-23 victory in the first match.
As the second match got underway, the seniors came out strong with a solid backline led by Lance Wogsland and Timmy Koehler, while Rio Coll and Jackson Wicks reinforced the net defence. However, the juniors, led by Damian Herrera and Giffin Crezee , quickly established control, surging to a 5 – 1 lead.
The seniors fought back, gradually closing the gap and eventually taking a 21 – 20 lead. A fumble on their side allowed the juniors to briefly pull ahead, but a dramatic last ditch save by Seamus Colborn sent the ball unexpectedly backwards, leading to a tie. Soon broken by the juniors giving them the win, concluding the second match.
The decisive third match started the action early with a prolonged rally that left the crowd on the edge of their seats, the gym falling silent the only thing to be heard was the shouts of coaches from the sideline and the squeak of sneakers on the court. The deadlock was finally broken when the ball dropped on the seniors side, prompting an eruption of cheers in support of a point for the juniors.
Both teams traded points in a tense battle, with the seniors momentarily gaining a 12-10 lead. But the juniors refused to back down, responding with a series of powerful plays that propelled them ahead by two points. As the final whistle blew, the juniors celebrated a hard fought victory winning 2 out of 3 matches.
The thrilling contest left players and spectators alike buzzing with excitement. A coach for the junior team, student Addison Shaller reflected on her team’s performance saying, “I think there was a lot of good teamwork. We were talking a lot more at the end. We were getting good blocks, getting good hits, and then we were placing the ball really well, and so we worked positively as a team.”
The annual Broman game once again proved to be an exciting and competitive event, showcasing the spirit and camaraderie of Truckee High School’s student athletes. With another successful showdown in the books.
