High school is what you choose to make out of it. Being involved in high school will help with friendships, finding new passions, and getting involved in things you enjoy, and it will improve your entire high school experience. Involving yourself can also significantly impact your growth and development because it is truly up to you what you want to immerse yourself in. No matter what you decide to join, whether it is playing a sport, acting in a THS play, joining a club, or anything else, it can help you find interest in the same things as other people, which can be a truly impactful experience.
Participating in school activities can allow you to build time management skills that can help you later because of balancing schoolwork with extracurriculars. Habits you develop when you are young tend to stick with you, whether working a job or in college. Balancing multiple things is crucial to success in whatever you are doing. Being involved can help boost your self-esteem and confidence whether you are trying to take a leadership role in a club, presenting, or in life.
Colleges and future jobs seek passionate and engaged students in their school communities. Being involved in extracurriculars shows passion and an intuitive desire to be involved, which could make you stand out later on. High School involvement can shape your future paths and help you discover what you truly want or don’t want to do.
When I first started at Truckee High as a sophomore transferring from Tahoe Expedition Academy, I felt genuinely lost because THS was the biggest school I had ever attended. Being a shy kid person definitely did not help because as I went through the year, I felt very lonely and adrift. That summer, I attended a summer program and found my passion for Journalism. I realized the impact of being with people with the same passion as you there. It was an eye-opening experience when I started my Junior year at THS. I helped found the Broadcast Media Club, where we produced monthly segments on Truckee High and the Truckee community, attended the Journalism Club meetings, and eventually joined the Journalism class, where I was the managing editor in the spring. I also enrolled in Leadership, which allowed me to understand the school better and meet many new people. Tahoe Truckee Media is an organization that films Tahoe Truckee Unified School district events, so I started volunteering where I helped them with lots of THS sports games. In the Spring of my Junior year, I ran for a Senior class leadership position and put myself out there in a way I never thought I could have before. The summer before senior year, I participated in two more summer programs in journalism, which solidified my love and passion for it.
Many people, including me, believed they missed their chance to be involved, whether because they didn’t start early or for some other reason, but this is not the case. The truth is that there are always opportunities, and it is just up to you to take the chance to be involved. Involvement does not have to be an all-or-nothing situation. It’s about exploring new things or continuing your passions where you can learn and grow as a person. Joining extracurriculars and being on a sports team connected me more to the Truckee High School community.
Truckee High School is what you want to make it. When I was in the middle of my sophomore year, I was sad because I thought I would enjoy a bigger school environment that would allow me to meet new people. However, in reality, it just made me feel lost. I never thought that year I would have ended up being as involved as I have become. I am genuinely grateful that I left my comfort zone because it turned my high school experience around.
