The second installation of the THS Film Festival is gearing up for the coming snow season!
The THS Film Festival is a competition between local student-athletes to see who can create the best winter sports-themed edit to be featured in the Truckee Times.
Last year only had one entry by graduate Blake Griffith, titled Guac. The video is one minute and 47 seconds long, being a collaboration between 10 unique participants. You can view last year’s winning edit on their YouTube channel BOXCAR or on the Truckee Times.
The premise of the festival is to display the incredible talent that Truckee and Tahoe students possess, along with getting participants more interested in videography and film production. Having participants leave their comfort zones and improve as athletes is another aspiration that the festival is working to accomplish
Since the TTUSD community is tight-knit and some students have peers at other schools in the district such as North Tahoe, having this festival expand is something we wish for as it grows. Knowing there are incredible athletes at other schools in the districts makes us want to be able to show their athleticism alongside Truckee High’s athletes.
While this competition is mainly freelance, there are a few guidelines to follow: Each film must be at least five minutes long, only contain school-appropriate material, include more than just clips of the sport, and it needs to display creative editing elements other than cutting the clips together. Guidelines and rules can be found in the form.
Some editing elements that could be included to enhance a film include music, interviews, b-roll (footage that isn’t the main action), and voiceover. There are many other aspects that could be integrated through editing but the ones mentioned previously are popular among several ski films.
The cutoff date for film entries is April 27th, 2025. Currently there is no screening date for the films. Prizes for the festival winners have also not been established as of this story’s publication date.
Updates on prizes and important dates will be published when confirmed. So, make sure to keep an eye on the Truckee Times website, Instagram, and posters around Truckee High School.
If you want to submit a film, use this form or find QR codes on posters around campus.
Good luck and have fun!
