A big part of the holiday season is embracing traditions, and one of Truckee High’s festivities is here. From December until winter break, leadership hosts the high school’s annual door decorating competition.
Participate by decorating your student success teacher’s door during December on boost days, the competition starts on December 9th and lasts until the 20th when judging will take place.
This year’s theme focuses on incorporating sustainability into the design by using recycled materials. Bring some holiday cheer to our school hallways by working together with your peers on fun and festive designs.
To provide a clearer understanding of the grading process, here’s an overview of the rubric used to evaluate each classroom door. There are seven categories, each scored on a scale of 1 to 4 points, with a maximum total score of 28. The categories are as follows:
- Sustainability and upcycling: To earn maximum points in this category, the key factor is the extent to which reused and recycled materials are included in the design. The judges are looking for things such as upcycled items, eco-friendly materials, or reduced waste.
- Creativity and originality: Judges are looking for originality, something that is going to stand out. Points will be given for innovation, and designs that are outside of the box.
- Aesthetic appeal: A door that scores highly in aesthetic appeal should be, “Extremely festive and eye-catching” as the rubric puts it. This category focuses on the visual impact of the design, with factors like color, agreement, and style. A 4/4 door should be striking, balanced, and engaging something that instantly draws attention.
- Collaborative effort: Door decorating is a team activity, it will be assessed how well participants worked together to create a cohesive design. Strong teamwork and effective communication are how you secure maximum points.
- Environmental awareness: This category rewards doors that effectively convey themes of sustainability and environmental consciousness. Judges will look for educational elements that highlight and bring awareness to eco-friendly practices.
- Use of diverse materials: Door decorations will feature a variety of materials that are natural, recycled, or repurposed. Innovation is encouraged when it comes to material choice. Incorporate different textures and colors to make your class’s door stand out.
- Overall impressions: Ultimately, all the specific details of your door should leave a lasting impression on the judges, one that grabs their attention.
According to Mrs. Delgado, the winning door will receive an exciting prize! To get involved and help with your class door, speak with your student success teacher about participating and contributing to the design.
