Dear Adults,
In the wake of election week, I have been left with a constant swirl of thoughts surrounding the future of our country. You elected Donald Trump, again. You let this happen. The majority of our country feels okay with what has happened and where this vote has gone. Sure, I mean, I get it, this benefits you. We all want to get rich quickly, that is the American dream, the American goal. But the truth is, this was the outcome. The country did choose this and millions of people have chosen this for the second time.
But have you thought about what you are leaving for your children, and future generations? When you are on your deathbeds after leaving us in this political climate, what will that mean? Leaving a climate of the most polarization between the two parties which run our political system the country has ever seen.
You might not assess the risks Trump poses in the same way we do. After all, we are the people that will get the disgusting leftovers of what you have created.
This is not a unique situation. There are people around the entire world that have it worse than us. Across the ocean, there are people who can’t express their own opinions. There are people who do not feel safe in their own country. And yes, there are people who may not feel safe right now, and my words of advice to my peers and young people is: take this as it is but never stop fighting for what you believe in and what you feel is right. The short history of America has reflected people’s grievances to their leaders. Yes, this feels terrible right now, but we are not the first people to be upset by what is going on in our country. We are not the only ones to be unhappy with the leader of their country. At one point everyone has been dissatisfied with the leadership. The result was Trump winning the election.
We are the people who are going to inherit the country, the world, the media, the government and maybe if we are not getting the outcome that we want now, we will someday. Because generations die and unless our country is not obliterated we will get what we want. We are going to keep fighting because it is not fair to have everyone check out and not participate anymore.
Adults, you are the one who will look back and should realize the mistakes that you have made. But, make sure that you understand that kids are your future. If you create a place where everyone in the generation after you decides that we don’t care and that we can’t make any changes anyways, then there will be nothing. There will be a place where nothing gets done and there is truly no hope. A place where we are too far gone after not caring for far too long. And while this is bad now, that would be even worse.
While many of you constantly try, you can not tell us how to feel. So try something new. Try to include us. Try to make policies and ideas that actually depict what we are trying to tell you. Because face it. We care so much about the environment and reproductive rights and families not getting split up and LGBTQ+ rights and the wars and pretty much everything that you are NOT mentioning. How does that feel? You are in one of the most unique positions in the world and you are not using it to its full extent. Does that not raise any red flags? Are you that un-self aware?
Please hear us when we say that this will not be the last time that we are speaking up. We are passionate and we are ready to get what we want despite your making it so much more difficult. This is supposed to be the place that is for the people. When will you start living up to that and practicing what we were meant to be unified as?
We are not making change and we are not being heard. So what’s the next step? Let’s check it out. At this point we are not making changes and not making the impact that we are trying so hard to make. Adults hear us when we say that we are fighting as many others have in the past and the situation of slowing involvement that we are experiencing.
Do you know that this is not about right vs. wrong and red vs. blue and Trump vs. Harris? This is about the unhappiness and the dissatisfaction that we are experiencing. Because the only thing that we are doing is checking out. And we have tried to take action and this election has shown that we have failed.
Young people! I hope that you remember this and know what the implications of what is happening with our world is. And try to remember this. Speak up, use your voice, fight for what you believe in and what you think is right. Understand what there is to do in the wake of the election and as we take on the country and the world. And use your voice. And Vote!
