The Mother Hips is a jam rock band from Chico, CA and has been putting out music since 1990. This band’s vibe is generally casual but rock-centered, with standout guitar solos and impressive vocals. The band’s current members are the co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono, as well as John Hofer and Brian Rashap.
The band was created when the members were attending California State University in Chico but now they are based in the Bay Area. Their current tours tend to stick to the West Coast, as 3 out of 4 of the band members are family men.
Although this band has been around since the 90s, they aren’t the most popular. As a smaller West Coast band their tours are small but have a strong cult following. However, The Mother Hips’ rock jam band vibe is perfectly matched by famous bands such as The Counting Crows, Weezer, The Allman Brothers and Lucinda Williams.
Their underrated nature creates a concert atmosphere unlike many other bands. Their experiences are more personal and there is a closer connection between the band and their listeners. Larger concerts do not allow for the same personal relationships with music, but The Mother Hips’ shows do.
The Mother Hips has 15 albums, 1 EP, and 9 singles out on Spotify. Some stand out albums are “Later Days”, “Shoot Out”, “Part Timer Goes Full”, “Back to the Grotto”, and their new album, “California Current”. “California Current” came out as their 14th album on September 27th, 2024.
They are currently touring on the West Coast. Their website provides information about their tour locations and dates, as well as an avenue to requesting a show location. Watch out for a show near you to experience a hidden gem of West Coast jam.
