During my four years at Truckee High School, I endured many setbacks. Pandemics (COVID-19) had completely shut our first two years of school off, and we also had major surgery. Our initial years were spent on a hybrid schedule, alternating between online and in-person classes. When we were allowed to return, it had to be with masks.
It wasn’t enjoyable.
The class of 2024 started their High School career with not an average start; there were no football games, no participating in school activities, and no hanging out with friends freely. But as COVID ended and restrictions got lifted, everything started to go back to every day, and many opportunities were given to us.
Playing soccer was one of the most significant and positive aspects of my high school experience. Despite the pandemic, I was fortunate to play high school soccer all four years. The sport provided a much-needed sense of normalcy and a way to connect with others during isolation and uncertainty. High School soccer even gave me my future roommate in college. All the bus rides and games and tournaments I would never change for anything because that made me who I am.
With my senior year ending, I faced another major setback. I was rushed to the ER with screaming abdominal pain. The doctors decided it was best to do an emergency surgery. I spent a week and a half in a hospital bed. While healing, I missed my senior prom and many more vital senior things. It truly affected my mental health. I was sad, mad, and confused about how this could happen to me. Despite these challenges, I have emerged stronger and more resilient.
The setbacks I faced have taught me to appreciate my opportunities and cherish the moments that shape my life. I’m so thankful for the help from the school, friends, and family. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.
The class of 2024 may have started with unprecedented problems, but in the end, that made us grow so close. I’m so thankful for all the opportunities given to me throughout high school, from soccer to making friends and being a part of a community. These experiences have prepared us for the future, teaching us the value of community, resilience, and the importance of staying positive in facing challenges.
I plan to continue to use these lessons I’ve learned in the future while I attend college.
