Recently on the internet Stockholm style has become increasingly popular. The style utilizes colors like muted dark blue, beige, black, white, and off white. There are little to no patterns other than stripes, and muted polka dots that are included; along with graphic tees that are preferred to have a city, town, or college shown on the front. Brands where it is easiest to find items that fit the aesthetic are stores like; Zara, Forever 21, H&M, Ralph Lauren, Pacsun, and Aeropastale.
Even though Stockholm fashion has become a big part of American youth culture, its European roots have been around for decades. Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the largest urban area in Scandinavia. Because it is made up of islands, the coastal chic is apparent, and still gives historic European vibes.
The purpose of the style is the idea of feeling comfortable while also being put together. Staples of an outfit could be linen pants with tops like laced tanks, cardigans and v-neck sweaters, or long sleeve shirts. Students often enjoy wearing things in this genre because they are able to look and feel comfortable while showing off their wardrobe and appearing clean.
Ruby Gadow, a sophomore at Truckee high school says that, “I always think about Stockholm when I shop because it makes me feel like I am going somewhere like Europe. I like that I can make a pair of flair sweatpants seem like it is a white-collar, bougie piece of clothing.” When putting the Stockholm aesthetic into words, it can be difficult. On one hand, it is practical and business casual; however on the other, it is coastal, preppy and comfortable.
If you want to dress like this over the summer, it is suggested that you are able to move around comfortably. Layers are your best friend when living in the Northern coast, so things like skin tight long sleeves with a pair of Motel Rocks jeans and a cardigan would create the perfect look. If you are staying in warmer places over this next summer, opt out of jeans for linens, and wear lace tank tops or a skin tight baby tee.
When it comes to shoes, there are actually many brands that work as long as you are color coding and keeping things minimal. Adidas Sambas, or Spezials’ go great with a basic outfit that is only really for walking around. Mary janes or ballet flats can also go great depending on the outfit when it comes to going out to lunch, or taking pictures.
The more gold the better. Gold rings, necklaces, earrings, or anything that you think enhances the look will work. The purpose of the gold is to look elegant and put together. When people see that you have jewelry on it often enhances the idea that you have time and money to spend on accessories.
Keep makeup to a minimum. The whole idea is to look professional and comfortable. Using mascara, lip gloss, and tinted sunscreen is a bare minimum. Don’t use full glam unless it is a big event. This gives a cleaner look and shows off natural beauty. Hair could be almost anything. Often these looks are seen with slick back ponytails, ponytail braids, slicked back buns, gentle braids, or a blowout.
Overall, Stockholm Fashion is a coastal European preppy that is comfortable and put together. This summer Stockholm style is taking off and more and more people are interested in the clean and professional aesthetic.
